Oh the Perils of the Evil VooDoo Donut!

IMG_0235Our last two house guests arrived back last night from their journeys of discovering the Great Northwest and guess what they brought back with them? Voodoo Donuts seems to be a landmark in Portland, Oregon that all visitors have to say they visited and the proof is sitting on my kitchen table and in my blood sugar numbers this morning.

After a long day of house work and extended time in the garden cutting down more overgrowth I was proud of both my activity and diet all day until those evil little donuts arrived in my home. All I can say is YUM.

I got Office 2016 for Mac loaded and quickly converted all of my files and got some needed financial work done in the morning. It’s good to have Excel back in my life once again. I have found that both excel and word work extremely well on the Mac and I really can’t tell the difference from working with them on a PC. I am extremely happy with the direction I am going with the Mac and believe it to be a wise move. I am also learning that I can work a lot easier with pictures right on my iPhone to prepare them for blog photos and simply email them to myself to place in this blog. The Voodoo Donut picture above is a prime example.

358568765_fldanger1_xlargeWe once again made a huge decision yesterday to wait at least another year before we make our move to Florida. The area we live in is a hot spot for rising property values and we believe that it would benefit us greatly if we just stayed put for another year to allow the value to rise a little more while continuing to save money and pay down our mortgage. We would both love to be in a position where we could purchase of home in Florida with cash rather than taking out a mortgage if that is possible and according to the numbers making that move right now will prove to be a little tight financially. We still have one more wedding to get through next year and we have to continue to save for that also. My youngest daughter will be getting married in November of 2017 in New Jersey and between the cost of the wedding and traveling we would be in a better situation to just stay on track.

My life certainly doesn’t sound like the life of a minimalist, but there is one thing that I believe in to be more important than what ever lifestyle we choose to live and that is family. I am not Catholic but I have to admit that I was extremely impressed with the Pope’s speech at Independence Mall in Philadelphia last night. The family is the most important part of a society and when the family breaks down so does our communities. Just about all of the ill’s of our current society here in America can all be traced back to some type of breakdown of the family. It seems to be a confusing dilemma that we are in but it is actually quite simple. When one puts something else above their own family the breakdown begins. It could be a job, a lover or even a hobby, but whatever it is it is never more important than your own family. The family must take priority over every desire we feel. It’s a matter of making a simple choice during a moment of thought.

Voodoo Donuts trivia- there can literally be:a 3 hour line in front of it. So as a tradition I go on Super Bowl Sunday, I don’t care about sports and it is the only time you can walk up to the counter with no line.

  2. I steer clear of donuts and cupcakes, but admit they are tempting

Yes the Pope is a shining light in our country this week. His influence even on non-Catholics is nothing less than amazing.

  5. Your 2 topics are so divergent yet how can you not like both?!? VooDoo doughnuts are awesome! Not Catholic but really amazed with the world-view leadership of the Pope.
