Welcome Back Cardio

treadmillSo I am back into the cardio scene on the weekends and after two sessions on the treadmill I can honestly say I have missed it. I find that while lifting weights is the key to playing the balancing act in Type II Diabetes, cardio is equally important to this balance.

One of the benefits which are never discussed is that of bathroom habits. I have noticed that while working out with heavy weight I don’t have the same urges to use the bathroom in the morning. Cardio speeds up your metabolism and also keeps the processes of the gut moving. Digestive health is normally addressed in the form of the foods which we eat, but I believe that cardio exercise also plays a vital roll in moving things from the mouth to the toilet.

I have also noticed that I am less hungry during the day and I believe that is due to faster absorption of all of the essential things that body needs to survive and thrive like vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates and fats. Once the body is satisfied I think the brain receives less signals for food. Of course this only works correctly if we are eating a balanced meal plan.

Cardio need not be performed every day, but keeping it in the mix 2-3 days per week certainly has made some incredible changes in my overall health. I try to keep it to a minimum of just 30-40 minutes per session because anything more pulls energy from the muscles. I work too hard on building my muscles to do anything that would reduce their size.

So welcome back cardio, as I remember it was you that initially helped me to lose those initial 35 lbs and started my body on the road to good health. I did miss those sweat dripping sessions of love and the feeling of the rush of blood running through my veins.

  1. Well done for cracking the cardio whip again. I have a love hate relationship with it myself. I hate the idea but love the feeling when the session is over and my lungs are spent and blood is pumping. I must confess I do compound this with a weight session directly afterward so get an even bigger fix!

    My week goes, lift, cardio, lift, cardio, lift, cardio, rest. If your cardio muscle isn’t healthy, it probably doesn’t matter what the rest of the muscles are doing.

    Nice to be reminded every now and then of the importance of cardio. As I am training for a particular challenge I am mainly doing cardio but at least once a week to some muscle work too to keep core fitness going!

    • Excellent! Remember to not overdo the cardio. It is better to do two thirty minute sessions per day than doing one sixty minute session.

        Ah but I am actually training for an alpine challenge where I have to cycle 360 miles in 4 days and climbing a total of 17000 ft so a lot of cardio and endurance required along with building core strength! But of course your advice above is very relevant for people who just want to stay fit and active, strong and healthy!
