Lets talk about security today. We have been taught through the help of the banking system that saving money is good. These institutions have created all kinds of products that make it easy for someone like myself to put away money each week so I can save for retirement. This is fine and I do take part in this system myself, but my question is – Is this real security? When I do reach the age where I want to stop working will this money that I have been saving be enough to get me through my golden years? I used to believe so until 2008 and now I am not so sure. In fact I don’t even know if the social security fund will still be around when I reach that age.
So with this in mind, over the last few years I have been thinking about what I call, “Personal Security”. What exactly will it take that will insure that I will be OK? I believe that there is only one investment that will still be secure and that is property. A piece of land that does not carry a mortgage, but is paid in full. A place I can call home where I can rest my weary bones. A place where I can grow my own food and also provides some type of rental income. The way I figure it I will no longer be getting a paycheck each pay period, but the population of those younger than me still will be. Everyone needs a place to live and rent will provide income. So what are we talking about here? A two family house with a large yard? A few acres of land with a few small houses built on it? Or just a few single family homes? It really doesn’t matter much, it is all a matter of personal preference, but the key is that it all has to be paid in full before retirement. It could even be as small scale as a few trailer homes, but either way it is a form of personal security. It is a way to create income when there is no income.
Living a simple life now allows me the opportunity to make this dream come true, and making this come true allows anyone to retire when they believe that it will support their lifestyle. Continuing to live a simple life in retirement ensures that this system will continue to work.
